Books and articles

Here’s a list of the books and articles that I have found useful or provide an interesting perspective on supervision. Few I have contributed to, many by others who has a specialist interest in clinical supervision.

This will be added to regularly, so do check back every now and them to see the new additions.

My poem I presented for my workshop at the BACP private practice conference in September 2023.

Brigid Proctor: has made so many contributions to the world of supervision. Hers and Francis Inskipp thoughts and model around the ‘normative, formative & restorative’ aspects of supervision is fundamental to understanding supervision.

Inskipp, F. and Proctor, B. (1st ed. 1993, 2nd ed. Revised 2009), The Art, Craft and Tasks of Counselling Supervision Part 1: Making the Most of Supervision. Twickenham: Cascade Publications,

Inskipp, F. and Proctor, B. (1st ed. 1995, 2nd ed. 2009), The Art, Craft and Tasks of Counselling Supervision Part 2: Becoming a Supervisor, Twickenham: Cascade Publications.

Michael Carroll: a total legend in the world of supervision, in my opinion!

Carroll, M. (1996). Counselling supervision: theory, skills and practice. London: Cassell.

Carroll, M. (2007). One more time: What is supervision?. Psychotherapy in Australia, 13(3), 34.

Carroll, M. (2014). Effective supervision for the helping professions: London: Sage.

Joyce Scaife: such insightful work that captures the nuances in supervision.

Scaife, J. (2003). Supervision in the mental health professions: A practitioner’s guide: East Sussex: Brunner-Routledge.

Scaife, J. (2013). Supervision in clinical practice: A practitioner’s guide. Routledge.

Check out Jim Holloway‘s supervision columns in the BACP Private Practice Journal. Jim dares to ask the sort of questions I try to engage with about supervision and looks critically at the process in supervision. His writing style is really engaging, humorous and Jim really knows his stuff. BACP members can access digital back copies of the journal by subscribing to the divisional journal via the website using their membership login.

Robin Shohet (in collaboration with others): he has been involved in writing some of the key supervision texts that have truly impacted and shaped the supervision profession:

Robin & Joan Shohet – In Love with Supervision (2020)

Shohet – Passionate Supervision (2007)

Peter Hawkins & Robin Shohet – Supervision in the helping professions (2007) – a key text for understanding the dynamic in supervision. A really useable model that has been recognised throughout the helping professions. My own copy is well worn!

Peter Hawkins newer book with Aisling McMahon – a really useful and accessible book: Hawkins, Peter, and Aisling McMahon. Supervision in the Helping Professions 5e. London: McGraw Hill, 2020.

Derek Milne and Robert Reiser have spent years honing their evidence-based supervision model. They have published a great deal, but for me this book really captures the foundation of their approach to supervision.

Milne, Derek, and Robert P Reiser. Supportive Clinical Supervision: Enhancing Well-being and Reducing Burnout Through Restorative Leadership. Pavilion, 2020.

For reflective practice – Barbara Bassot has some brilliant books to prompt reflective thinking.
